The Fratellis

Here We Stand

The Fratellis? Boo! Stick ’em in the stocks and chuck rotten accusations at ’em. Stoopid! Ugly! Old! Hairy! Sell-outs! Look at them gormlessly churning out their simple-minded, daft singalongs for the great unwashed!

Jeez, there’s a real stench of snobbery about much of the tired criticism of this group. As if The Beatles, Oasis, Blur, even The Libertines, haven’t recorded silly songs for casual music fans to wash the car to. Let’s be clear, The Fratellis aren’t cool, and this album illustrates that, in contrast to the similarly reviled Pigeon Detectives, they’ve stopped trying to be so. If you thought ‘Costello Music’ was shamelessly commercial, you ain’t seen nothing yet, pop-pickers. Every song here is packed with melodies, harmonies, hooks and key changes, all flashing their frilly knickers at Radio 1.

Opener ‘My Friend John’ begins at a Last Shadow Puppets gallop, introduces a Muse-lite riff before hitting a chorus right out of the Stereophonics (warning: reference points in this review may be offensive to those of an indie disposition) cack-book. ‘A Heady Tale’’s boogie piano and folky bent make it part-Chas & Dave, part-Beautiful South, and it somehow doesn’t make you want to gas yourself. When it stands up for a big clap-along, you can almost hear the bingo-wings flapping in memory of the British music halls.

Elsewhere, ‘Shameless’ (maybe named after the TV series that influenced the band’s style), sounds like the theme to a ’70s dramedy with Dennis Waterman, complete with showy T-Rex guitar. “Fuck it,” The Fratellis cry, “we’ll never be The Strokes, so let’s be Mud!” ‘Look Out Sunshine!’, is basically just one big chorus, complete with a rabble-rousing key change for wedding discos. ‘Mistress Mabel’ begins like The Levellers doing Madness and will leave you vomiting uncontrollably, but then they nail a chorus, ramp up the pace, drop out suddenly, dramatically roll back up, then re-nail that chorus. You’ll fall for it like a dog chasing an unthrown stick.

If you look at it as a Grand Guignol of rock cheese, this album is huge fun. You feel The Fratellis are never going to be a truly loved pop institution á la Slade, as their sullen nature seriously undermines their songs’ puppy charm. Nevertheless, this will sell gazillions, and you’ll hate yourself for how much you enjoy it.

Stupid, Ugly, Old, Hairy Sell-outs... wtf? Who's calling them that... erm, no one at all. I've ever met one person who's ever said anything of the above relating to the band at all. It's not an issue, it never will be. The music is the issue. That is all.

7 out of 10? Eh? Goodness me no. Now I was a huge fan of Costello Music (my album of the year in 06), but this is just damn awful. I so wanted to like this, but there's nothing to like, it's just dull - hopefully something to come this year as so far it's been rubbish - KOL and Sigur will hopefully do it.

"you’ll hate yourself for how much you enjoy it,"............(yawn)............... hmmm, must be a coldplay fan. There's nothing shameless about this album except the third track. This is pop the way it's meant to be. Let's hope we have more of what these lads and franz ferdinand are doing and less "we take drugs indie bands" who take themselves way too seriously and think they're the next libertines.

Who cares if the Fratellis are a little bit commercial. It's not like they aren't amazingly talented! I'm yet to hear a song by them that I don't think is amazing. Why would we hate ourselves for liking the new album, it's awesome! What does a band have to do to get a 9/10 around here ?

Well they produced one of 2006's best albums, will they do the same this year? Judging by the fabulous Mistress Mabel - YES :)

Hmm, it's not bad. Not as good as Costello Music. My Friend John is a genuinely good song though!! 7 out of 10 is about right I reckon

6 out of 10 might be a better rating.. actually no 7 is good. My Friend John is a great song.

Dgoosenberg: maybe to get a 9/10 a band needs to do something that hasn't been done a million times (and a million times better) before...although nme regularly gives this tosh 7/8 /10.

God this band really do suck. I cannot think of a band worse than this and thats saying something when we have Pigeons,Mark Ronson,Wombats and Black Kids to listen to. Can the music get any worse this year?NOTE: Get your Tongues out of Glasvegas's Backsides, its getting boring and you seem to do it with any band that catches your eye

What a shit review, i like fratellis!Loved costello music but i aint mad bout this 2nd album, although a few of its songs are startin to grow on me. I hate the way its defined that because of a song like chelsea dagger the band are known as a sing-a-long kinda band. Not fair really, cos theyve a few good tunes.

totally rubbish review!! The Fratellis make decent music and i am not ashamed to say i LOVE IT! It is a real pity that some people only think of songs such as Whistle For The Choir and Chelsea, they are good songs but they have better ones! Here We Stand was no Costello Music but it didn't have to be. It was awesome in its own right- the band seemed to have matured, whilst still keeping that recognisable Fratellis element- good going guys! Here We Stand grew on me the more i listened, its more than just popish sing along stuff- mon the fratellis!
