Rufus Wainwright 2005

Tiergarten

Get beyond the fact that, in roughly five years, Rufus will be holed-up in some Las Vegas ballroom playing to thousands of walking corpses looking for someone else to rattle their jewellery to now Barbra Streisand’s had herself cryogenically frozen and, really, he’s quite good. Take ‘Tiergarten’ – a gentle Walt Disney-esque ramble through snowy Berlin parkland that, through twinkling guitars and cooed backing vocals, slowly builds to a gentle-but-stirring climax. Upon which Rufus pushes his paramour on to a pile of leaves and quickly gets down and filthy, the silver-tongued charmer.

Great single choice, one of the more immediate cuts off 'Release The Stars', it's definitely one of Rufus's less pompous tracks, one that showcases his great voice, not his love for complex orchestrations...or flings with white-suited frontmen.

Tiergarten is one of the best songs on the Release the Stars album as far as simplicity goes.
Its lilting sound without all the usual pomp Rufus fans are accustomed to just goes to show that his voice is just sublime and he can sing with or without masses of music behind him. A true musical genius. Singer/songwriter and all round entertainer.

Tiergarten, if released as single and not just download would likely be candidate for top 10 at least.
