Prince

London O2 Arena, 01/08/07

It’s the opening night of Prince’s 21-night residency at London’s white elephant-turned-entertainment megadome, and everything’s going spectacularly Vegas. An extended muzak version of ‘What A Wonderful World’ is in progress and his robo dancing duo Twinz are gyrating and making us feel like we’re watching bad porn, when Ian Huntley invades the stage. Luckily, it turns out it’s just an unfortunate lookalike who gets up to dance to ‘Musicality’. “I’ve got more hits than Madonna’s got kids,” the ribless Purple One jibes. This may be true, but it takes ’til the third (third!) encore when it’s just him, an electric guitar and ‘Raspberry Beret’ to fully realise his genius.
