Big Ideas

“Can you do film soundtracks?” they ask James Murphy. “Course I can,” he says, and 12 seconds later he’s back wearing a beret and murmuring about “the mise en scène”. Actually, ‘Big Ideas’ – ripped from the soundtrack to 21 – is not so atypical LCD fare. Like a groovy cousin to ‘Watch The Tapes’, things kick off with a driving motorik chug spattered with occasional Joy Division drum fills. It all changes with Murphy’s appearance around the midpoint, taking on some of the sozzled grandeur of Iggy’s ‘The Idiot’ without ever once letting its foot off the gas. A montage awaits!
