Foals

Antidotes // Transgressive

How To Deal With Hype, lesson #1: on Never Mind The Buzzcocks earlier this year, Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis received the traditional ribbing from Simon Amstell about their status as buzz band of the moment. “You wake up every morning, there’s the buzz,” joshed the punchable presenter. “Any plans to convert this buzz into success?”
Yannis barely flinched. “We’ve made a record that’s just solid drones for 40 minutes and no songs. It’s funny… all these people have tipped us and it’s absolutely unlistenable.” He was deadpanning, of course. Wasn’t he?Stick ‘Antidotes’ on and the first thing you hear is… a drone. Five sustained blasts of brass, veering in and out of harmony, eerily, ominously, for 25 seconds. Then the drums crash in, punching out a fierce, tribal rhythm before gliding into a more familiar punk-funk groove, textured by cosmic guitar ripples and joined finally by Foals sarcastically chanting the slogan from a French TV advert for Lacoste tennis gear while the trumpets swoop and groan in the background. Solid drones and songs! Welcome to Foals’ world, where having your cake and eating it is the staple diet.

Foals are the brainy, mathletic puzzle-popsters who know how to rock a party; the ambitious sonic voyagers who’d rather play a gig in your garden shed than at the Brixton Academy – and then, after their legion of excitable followers have trashed it, they’d humbly stick around and design you a chic but practical new outhouse extension. More than that, they are the one British band who can rival Battles, !!!, Dirty Projectors or Holy Fuck for cortex-knotting thrills. They’ve not just talked the talk in terms of obscure reference points, they’ve quested beyond their comfort zone to collaborate with Brooklyn art-rock ubermensch Dave Sitek and the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. On ‘Antidotes’, Foals haven’t wandered off the map – the droning brass intro and the glitchy breakdown of ‘Like Swimming’ are as experimental as they get – but they’ve rendered their world in vivid, exotic hues.
How To Deal With Hype, Lesson #2. ‘Antidotes’ gives us plenty to chew on. Yannis’ lyrics can often appear cryptic but there are clues to where his head’s at. Mostly he’s railing against the clutter of modern life: the trivia you’re constantly force-fed by the mass media to keep your brain sedated, “these wasps’ nests in your head” (‘Red Socks Pugie’).

The album title promises solutions that never come and ‘Balloons’ and ‘Olympic Airways’ deal in escapism. However, there’s something sinister in the way the latter suggests you can solve all your problems by insulating yourself against the world in “an aviary for today”. ‘Antidotes’ ends with Yannis warning, “Something won’t heal, comforts can’t help you out” before he’s engulfed by those atonal trumpets. It’s not just because they come from Oxford that Foals have been called the new Radiohead. How To Deal With Hype, lesson #3. By abandoning popular 2007 singles ‘Hummer’ and ‘Mathletics’ Foals are aligning themselves with the likes of New Order (‘Blue Monday’ was controversially left off ‘Power, Corruption & Lies’) – a band whose obstinacy and capriciousness was almost as much a part of their legend as their music. ‘Cassius’ and ‘Balloons’ are sturdy replacements, their slight, insidious choruses embedded in concrete structures that owe more to dance than rock. Foals’ stated aim was to recreate the feel of techno tracks – repetitive basslines, layering of sounds, build-ups and breakdowns – with live instruments. There are no lazy chords; instruments slither purposefully over and around each other.

Their debut sounds sleek and exhilarating, although Foals seem cautious about completely breaking out of the punk-funk strictures that have confined them so far. They hop nimbly from one foot to the other to give the illusion of progress, but ultimately repeat themselves: ‘Two Steps, Twice’ jolts to an inventive rhythm but its nuts and bolts are almost identical to those of ‘Cassius’ (which itself isn’t a million miles away from ‘Hummer’) and it shamefacedly shoplifts a riff directly from The Cure’s ‘A Forest’. The Rapture and !!! should also be expecting some kind of sleeve credit. If there’s one dark shadow over this album, though, it’s that there’s a lot of tension and precious little release. Too much anguished yelping and not enough joy – a mood that ultimately becomes a bit oppressive. When Foals open the pressure valve on ‘Red Socks Pugie’ (“our heart swells up, which make us explode”) it’s the best moment on the album. Foals remixed ‘Antidotes’ in London, complaining that Dave Sitek made it sound like it was “recorded in the Grand Canyon” – but perhaps they should have ceded to his widescreen vision after all. How To Deal With Hype, lesson #4. Make a really good album but not a great one. Let reviewers remind everyone Radiohead’s first album was not ‘The Bends’ but ‘Pablo Honey’. Alert everyone to your potential but don’t fulfill it. Remain enigmatic while firing out enough tuff rhythms to keep us dancing. Textbook stuff from the Oxford fivesome, then.

7 out of 10

textbook stuff but only 7 out of 10? quite odd. surely it would be better to blow people away with your debut album than only alerting people to your potential. it sounds to me that you're making excuses for them. i doubt very much that they set out to make a 7 out of 10 album. its also worth pointing out that you allotted far more magazine space to this review than to the, by your own admission, considerably better Elbow record. sales are dwindling for a reason.

his wide screen vision? what does that even mean. "recorded in the grand canyon" means he produced the album swamped in reverb and echoe. i think the reviewer is trying to say that the grand canyon thing was a mainstream thing. reviewers shouldnt be allowed to review unless they know about music and music production. not who has a good hair cut, this review doesnt do its rating any justice.

i hate this band so much, their music is really qutie pathetic!!!

What!?

Mar 17, 2008

These lot are not very good at all, it's boring music, no tunes! Another example of hype not being fulfilled! Whatever happened to rock and roll!!

It's not boring, just different. And anyway, if it's 'math-rock', maybe it's meant to be boring...

I don't agree, I love Foals to bits. Probably justified seeing as I'm the only person who noticed or the only person anal enough to care that 'muserocker' spelt 'echo' wrong.

From your description of their music, I really fail to see how they sound like Dirty Projectors, but I will give them a chance because of that reference. Funny old game, this biz of show.

foals just give the indie snobs another reason to self congratulate. Live they appear to be really interesting but having heard 'Cassius’ and ‘Balloons’ about a million times on the radio I still feel like it's a joke where I still don't get the punchline. It's like the turner prize in musical form - pretentious and forgettable.

Foals Album is going to be one of the most popular album of 2008. Screw the sceptics, if you don't like don't buy it that simple and compared to most of the indie bands out there, they have their own unique sound and are not trying (like every other band) to sound like the goddamn Artic Monkeys!

I cant take it anymore, I completely agree with arguing on tinterweb being pretty retarded (y'know what im on about: its like the special olympics, if you win you're still....) Oi Riverboat! Please stop with the comments - I'm sure you make everyone cringe on a level that the Brentmeister General couldnt comprehend. If there's one word to describe your comments collectively: IGNORANT. In this state of bliss you have constantly embarrassed yourself with your opinions - which is your right and perfectly acceptable - but doesn't mean you dont come of as a MASSIVE Cuuu....

Some rants from your past, i recollect: "libertines not being that good", "the enemy are much better than t'Monkeys" and maybe the most ridiculous comment EVER, wait for it people........... "Radiohead have some OK songs" ??!?!?!??!?!? You Sir, are an almighty CABBAGE. You've obviously touched a nerve, but this level of idiocy needs to be addressed and you may need to be sectioned. Antidotes is genius. I'm sure its not your fault (its in the genes) that you cant understand it. Also screw the NME for , recently again, poor reviewing. Now go masturbate to Dodgy.

After hearing Cassius I totally fell for Foals and had to buy the album. Every song on it is brilliant in its own way and I've barely stopped playing it! Great band, fail to see how 7/10 is a fair review!

'Antidotes'...what an amazing album. Some of the tracks where slower than i expected, as i usually prefer the fast paced stuff, but tracks like Balloons and Cassius (best track on the album) make up for the gap. The reworked version of The French Open is awesome (I've only heard the version on the transgessive cd NME release with the magazine), an Two Steps Twice was another track i jumped straight to after hearing a segment on Zane Lowe's hottest records podcast. It didn't let me down. The record is great, one of the best purchases i've made, and as Jazee says, it's definately a 9 out of 10. My recommendations if you want a taster before purchasing - Balloons, Cassius, The French Open and Two Steps Twice

This band is the definition of everything that is shit in music today. Signed because of the frontmans haircut rather than ability to write songs, it acts as further proof that the nme's attempts at being 'alternative' are complete rubbish, as they fail to comprehend anything that wasn't written in between shopping trips to topshop. God i hate this band. Whatever happened to good music?

The first time I heard Foals was with the single Cassius, first I hated it ''new indie tripe''. Then I started to like to hate it, almost mocking the band members everytime I listened to it for dropping out of Oxford to start a band. Judging by the album they should have stayed at Oxford. Good luck in 3 years time.

Shame the singer is a twat with a bad voice ain't it?

i think anyone who claims foals have "no tunes" is perhaps judging this by their judgement on the one or two songs they mightve heard. You can't judge an album by one song. This album is full of great tunes and has an incredible musical depth at times. A solid album.P.S. whats all this shit about Yanis whateverhisnameis' haircut? i think thats just aload of people who don't like the music hating on them for something thats got nothing to do with the band. His haircut is pretty boring, why would anyone be bothered about it??

I almost feel pressured to agree with everyone, but i honestly think they are good!! Cassius, although tedious after a while, is a song that must be heard and with that, it makes the band worth our while to get to know. Their music is A OK!

Everybody have a listen to the band Liars. Foals are a sheer emulation of this great band.

would the critics like another we are/razor/knife/detectives (??).. they all blend into 1. At least Foals are trying to do something different.

Apr 21, 2008

Hmm...Foals are different...just not as exciting on this album as they are on their early singles. And dare I say this, but it doesn't half remind me of Hot Club De Paris in places. I think this set of tunes will come across well live and a little less homogenous than they sound here. A good debut all in all, and I look forward to their second!

one of the strangest things I've ever heard but sheer quality Cassus is definety the best track

shaunyeah

May 19, 2008

I think foals made a mistake not including hummer in their album. Any good album has at least 3 or 4 songs that stick in your mind; Cassius, Balloons..........I think they needed Hummer. Although they're completely different I think does it offend you, yeah?'s album shows this, all of the songs on that album stick in your mind and therefore, they've produced a better album. Although antidotes is technically good, music isnt about technicality, it's about tunes, and this album lacks them.x

Yet another band that i fucking adore but no one else seems to know why? Foals doing it differently! they're fucking brilliant! Yannis should look at the crowd once and a while though!

Foals are amazing i think 7/10 was fair though some of the tracks are abit iffy.

This band I believe is going to win the mecury prize that was if the ting tings had come out. But NME for once 9/10 really. Cassius rules!

Koreema_know

Jul 14, 2008

7 out of 10 is the right mark for this album. The best song is Olympic Airways, and for me, Cassius is Foals trying to craft a mainstream pop song, and it failing! Cassius is really irritating in my opinion. Balloons is brilliant, as is Red Socks Pugie, however.
