Toni Braxton settles lawsuit against manager
R&B star is now a free agent
Toni Braxton has settled her multimillion-dollar lawsuit against her former manager, Barry Hankerson, and her former label, Blackground Records, LLC.
Under the terms of the settlement, Braxton will no longer have recording obligations to Hankerson or Blackground Records, leaving her free to work with other agents and labels.
"My freedom from Barry Hankerson is priceless, and means everything to me," Braxton said in a statement issued this week.
"This settlement allows Ms. Braxton immediately to start new projects of her choice," added her trial lawyer, Peter L. Haviland.
In the suit, the R&B star alleged that Hankerson was operating under a conflict of interest when he advised her to leave Arista Records in 2003 and sign with Blackground Records. Braxton sought to end her contractual obligations with both parties, which was achieved in the settlement.
