Zutons: 'everyone thinks Amy Winehouse wrote Valerie'

Band perform intimate afternoon gig

The Zutons have admitted that people think they are covering Amy Winehouse when their perform 'Valerie'.

The song featured on the Liverpool band's 'Tired Of Hanging Around' album in 2006, after which Mark Ronson picked it for his 'Version' covers album.

Performing a five-track session for Virgin Radio this afternoon (May 21), frontman Dave McCabe joked that most people think it’s actually Winehouse's track.

"Well everyone wants a piece of me…People have asked me [to write songs] but no one famous," explained McCabe of the fall out as the band kicked off their set with 'Valerie'. "I think they see it as Amy Winehouse’s song…I don’t mind."

Playing to a small crowd of fans the band also performed current single 'Always Right Behind You' and hinted that the next single could be a track called 'Put A Little Aside'.

The short set went smoothly until the final track, album song 'Dirty Rat', when McCabe asked if they could restart halfway through.

At the end he explained that he became a bit overwhelmed saying: "It got too intense for me you know."

When asked what the track was about he added: "It's a bit deep and horrible, like."

The Zutons played:

'Valerie'
'What's Your Problem'
'Put A Little Aside'
'Why Won't You Give Me Your Love?'
'Dirty Rat'

the Zutons are my favorite band I've never listened to. Winehouse covering their song is the best thing that could've happened to them.

A tabloid muppet covering one of your songs. Yeah, best thing that could have happened. A moronic fake rebel pretending to be Sid Vicious, making watered down musak verisions of your material does wonders for your credibility.

It was a quality song and she did a great version, possibly one of the only decent songs done by Mark Ronson. Fuck off to you musical snobs that jump on a bandwagon to not liking artists because they become popular.

Good song, by a good band.Over played but not a bad cover - Amy does has a good voice - it's just pity that the mindless muppets would rarther follow the gutter press and sit at home slagging her off.Jeez she isn't the first talented muso to have drug problems and she wont be the last - it's not even newsworthy!
