Owners want to save iconic venue with Manc supergroup

Spurned on by Morrissey's £20,000 gift to the Salford Lads and Girls Club, the clubs treasurer Mike Scantlebury has made a plea to all musicians associated with the club to "put aside their musical differences" and create a Number One for 2008.

Scantlebury hopes that the record will help pay for the essential repairs still needed on the building's roof.

Refusing to stop merely at the talents of The Smiths, the club hopes to create a Manchester supergroup including The Hollies and Herman's Hermits.

The song of choice is The Associated Youth Clubs of Manchester's very own anthem 'Ending Youth Struggle', which Scantlebury suggests could be re-written as the 'Trendy Youth Shuffle'.

Speaking about the song he declared, "It could be the new dance sensation for the 00s."

Looks like 2008 could be the year the nu-skiffle scene kicks off big time.
