Fans of My Chemical Romance have protested outside the offices of British newspaper the Daily Mail this afternoon (May 31) in response to articles they have published about emo.

The protest began at noon (BST) and saw around 40 fans - a number agreed with police ahead of the demonstration - cramming into Derry Street outside the newspaper's building.

The fans filled the street with placards and banners with slogans like "I'm Not Afraid To Keep On Living" and "We're Not A Cult, We're An Army – The MCRMY" and sung a selection of My Chemical Romance songs.

"It's been brilliant, such a good atmosphere. We've all united for a good cause," protestor Katie Hughes, 15, from Dorking told NME.COM. "Most people here always listened to My Chemical Romance positively."

The protest has been peaceful and broadly good natured with police telling NME.COM that the protesters have "kept well within the law and organised everything beforehand. It's going fine."

Alongside the protest, a bigger group of fans, believed to be in the hundreds, have congregated nearby at Marble Arch where they are holding a vigil that is expected to last until around 10pm (BST). More information on the march can be found at whatthefrank.co.uk.

The fans are protesting about a series of articles the paper published in the aftermath of the suicide of Hannah Bond, a My Chemical Romance fan and comments the coroner made at her inquest criticising emo's influence in her death. One piece in particular claimed that "no child is safe from the sinister cult of emo".

The Daily Mail though has issued a statement in reaction to the protest insisting that its coverage has been balanced and restrained.

However protestor Dani (who did not giver her surname), 14, from London was not impressed with their articles.

"This isn't the first time the Mail has had a go at bands and made them scapegoats," she declared. "I think most of it is just ignorance, they always have to have someone to blame."

Hi, I'm Katie Hughes, the one you interviewed. Thanks so much for being there NME - weren't the vibes going around just fantastic? So many "free hugs" and random chatting to people I have never met in my life. I think you summed up what I said nicely :) best day of my life! And even the party crashers with the Guy Fawkes masks joined in eventually, with the sing alongs, dance offs and conga lines! I hope the media take note. And by the way, there weren't 40 kids there - there were at least 200, maybe 300, and probably countless more. Who doesn't enjoy a ceremonious burning of a rag such as The Daily Mail? People have been saying that it was pointless, and that the kids doing it were socailly retarded. It wasn't the most pointless protest ever, and it wasn't 40 socially retarded kids. It was people who have an opinion , marching for something they believe in. They were marching to show people that My Chemical Romance has helped people. It has made people realize that other people in the world have problems, and they aren't alone. It was a protest to show people that 'emos' aren't all suicidal, and that bands shouldn't be blamed for people's suicides. If a person is depressed enough to kill themselves, then a song is not likely to make them do it, they will probably do it anyway.

It's great that these teenagers protest against something as awful as a "newspaper" contributing to hatred toward subcultures. As if we don't have enough of that already. The way the Daily Mail portrayed emo and MCR is practically glowing with ignorance and creating nothing but hatred towards an already stigmatized subculture. There are already so many disturbing signs in society today (like what happened to Sophie) - we cannot tolerate this anymore. We need to respect each other and be more tolerant; the Daily Mail apparently thinks otherwise though.

I back those 40 kids up 100%, but the only problem is that there's 40 of them. The Daily Mail are so obviously in the wrong here, but I'm sure the guy that wrote the story got a snug little bonus for his snide work. It's a shame that our media today is so twisted and will report bullshit to any length (as seen here) just to sell a few more lies to us.I really wish more people had joined that protest, their message is so strong, but with only 40 of them it's probably just made their message look weak and childish, which it truely isn't.Good luck to the MCRmy!

The Daily Mail are always having a pop at something. I think the fact that the Daily Mail felt the need to defend themselves & their position in a written statement shows that the fans have achieved something with their efforts.And as a side note, aren't all 3 MCR albums concept albums about vampires? Movies express ideas while telling stories too - and you don't see too many people complaining about that (notable exception I can think of is Natural Born Killers).Emo isn't a musical style anymore - it's a label for a culture, and the music is just a tiny component of that culture, and can't be one-dimensionally assigned blame. That would be like blaming the road in a car crash - sure it was there, but there are probably bigger elephants in the room that indicate why this terrible tragedy happened.I don't know what this girl's story was & I've never read the article from the Daily Mail and to be honest, I can't be fucked. But I'll take a pretty safe guess here and say that there was definitely other pressures in this girl's life, and maybe a pre-disposition to depression and depressive behavior. Elephants - it's all about the elephants.

I was wondering why our generation gets so much stick the other day, and now it makes so much sense. In this time of absoloute turmoil, and the huge ammount of things we could protest against, we have 40 kids complaining against a third rate journalist's comments in a newspaper that no-one cares about. It shows us all up a bit. If protests are going to happen, why cant they be against things that are genuingly challenging us all. Also, if the emo "scene" has taught me anything, it's that emos would be more scared nd dissapointed if they DID'NT get any criticism.

I can't believe the fuss being made over this. Yes, it's absolutely tragic a young girl took her own life, but I think we're all agreed it wasn't solely because of music - there were obviously much deeper issues affecting her.I just think it's quite ironic that most of the kids there were protesting against a paper most of their parents probably buy.I wouldn't really call 60 people an army (sorry, and mcrmy...???) and there are probably a hundred other issues more worthy of a protest than complaining about people not liking an over-exposed commercially-accepted band like MCR.

It would be nice if kids took this much interest in pressing world issues. Where are the marches for animal rights, global warming and world peace? Teens like these are the ones that show up the rest of us, not living in reality but in a world of celebrity and influence.I dont agree with what the Daily Mail has said, but claims like this have been made for years. Find a new and innovative way to fight back, make them see that they are wrong. Standing outside singing songs that they think induce suicide isn't likely to change their minds. It going to make them think that you ARE a cult. And that's the opposite of what you were aiming for.

I think its really good that people are willing to actually do something to defend themselves and their lifestyles. The problems are adults who are completely ignorant of this kind of stuff. Why can't people just leave other people alone? What's actually the problem with people "dressing funny"???? Why should that even matter?? Ugh this actually sickens me. Reading the arguments put forward by those in favour of the protest makes me lose all hope in this current generation. I hate My Chemical Romance possibly more than any other band in the world. But in the same respect I hate The Daily Mail even more. Emo is a load of shite (seriously, grow up guys) but the way the Mail reported this incident was beyond ridiculous, so fair play to those protesting. Still, how about protesting against the Mail next time they publish an article about something that actually matters? Their constant anti-Europe propaganda for instance. Or their archane stance on Islam. Thats just two examples of the daily bile they spew upon the world, but it's not really surprising from a paper still owned by a family that supported Hitler and Tim Mosley. To whoever said this is a paper nobody cares about, I'm sad to say you're wrong - it sells nearly a million copies a day and is the 2nd most read daily publication in Britain. That doesn't make it alright, but it does mean that people listen to what it says. I never thought I'd be sympathetic to the emo community, but for once we have a common enemy. Fuck The Daily Heil!

Okay, I'm neither an emo or a fan of MCR. But d'you know what? In this time of absolute indie blandness from the likes of the Pigeon Detectives, Arctic Monkeys and The Enemy etc I'm SO glad that at least one band, regardless of your opinion of them or their music, has made some form of cultural impact. This protest, no matter how minor, has made it's mark in music history and will be noted upon in years to come.That, girls and boys, is what music is all about.

I, as a parent of three well adjusted adults, always find it interestering when the papers rush to blame music or movies for a teeneagers suicide. I am a huge MCR fan and actually turned my kids on to them several years age. While I don't consider them to be Emo, whatever that is supposed to be, I find their lyrics full of hope. I think the poor girl must've had something horrible in her homelife. They rush to point fingers at her music instead of looking closely enough at her family. It makes one wonder what sort of home abuse she may have been enduring, the poor dear.

First of all, I am a huge fan of My Chemical Romance, and I'm most certainly NOT emo... about as far from it as you can possibly be, actually... and neither is MCR. That deletes the whole "emo" thing. They really aren't, and it annoys me when people call them emo. What really angers me, however, that My Chemical Romance tries so hard to tell teenagers that suicide and self harm aren't worth it; that they should seek help with adults or close friends, and that everyone belongs in this world. But then someone, in this case the Daily Mail, accuses them of the opposite - of glamorizing death and creating an "emo suicide cult." MCR is showing the world, very openly, that no one should commit suicide or do drugs or harm themselves in any way whatsoever... but society, as shallow as it is, can't look beyond the darkness of reality and their music to see the message they're trying to tell the teenage population. I wish I would've been there. So what if there are only 40 people? The MCRmy is fighting for what they believe in, and that's what counts. MCR isn't just a band, no matter how much you criticize them.

The issue with this really isn't MCR. It is the much more serious issue of ignorance and taboo surrounding mental health issues such as depression, self-harm and suicide.MCR and "Emo" is sitting on the surface, what the Daily Mail need their attention bringing to is the seriousness of these conditions and that it is a mind set not music/scene/cult that will cause them to occur.

after listening to a video on utube to debate, both anon and fans had good points. mcrymy about their band, but anon raised being proactive and address the real reasons why kids commit self harm. the bullying issue needs to be forfronted with all teens, all people, our society as a whole. whoever wrote that "good manners is the glue to society" was correct. i was flippant about this statement , going, yeah, right. But after years of mass murder suicide incidences all over the world, columbine, virginia tech, and our kids suicides, enough is enough. address the real issues. get to the bottom of it. music's the scapegoat.

I can't believe some of the comments on here. My Chemical Romance are not 'just a band' as many of you seem to think. They are basically an anti-suicide organisation who choose music as the medium to spread their message. If I lived in London, or indeed anywhere in England I would have certainly gone to the protest. People obviously cannot see that this was worthwhile and meaningful, and you are obviously not reading into the issue at all. Imagine what would happen if a newspaper printed a story saying Greenpeace were really encouraging whaling, do you think people wouldn't protest over that? It's not just some paper dissing a bunch of 'emos' favourite band. My Chemical Romance arent even "emo". Just cause they wear drain pipes and have a fringe it doesent mean their emo. Emo was a genre untill you fuckin avril lavigne loving kids moved on to something harder and declared yourself emo, ruining a genre. Go back to liking busted you fucking dicks. As for the protest, what the fuck! Dont be so fuckin stupid. As if a bunch of spotty kids can change what a corperate newspaper writes or portrays a genre.

What amazes me about all of the backlash to this protest is the distinct lack of any research into the events that happened on Saturday. As far as I understand from reading a couple of sites the 40 protesters outside the Daily Mail offices were an advised number given by the police due to the space on the street adjacent to the building. I'm not particularly bothered by My Chem but I can understand how the kids feel because ten years ago when I was their age my favourite band were being scapegoated as inciting suicide and murder. All of the people that are slagging off these kids just for wearing certain clothes or listening to certain bands need to to stop being so ignorant and realise that people enjoy different things. I could go on for hours about all of the arrogant indie tw*ts that listen to bands like The Kaiser Cheifs and Oasis and The Pidgeon Detectives thanks to the handful of people I've met who have fulfilled that stereotype of people that listen to those kinds of bands, but it wouldn't be fair or just to say such things. Get your heads out of your backsides and realise that although on the surface the protest was to promote MCR it also had a deeper message. It was defending music of all kinds, it was defending that connection we all have with a band or artist and the freedom to listen to music and be who we feel comfortable being. It was about the ideal of being able to be someone and listen to music without having to be attacked for that. If there are more bigots like the Daily Mail then this will only make it harder for people to enjoy bands and make serve to exacerbate the issue of teen suicide.So let these kids enjoy the freedom to wear their clothes and listen to their bands no matter how much you disagree with it if only because you're allowed to do it yourself.

I can understand both sides of the arguement in this, i mean the mail weren't wholly truthful in what they printed and it maybe overstepped the mark but all of the MCR fans couldn't possibly know if the girl commited suicide because of the music or not, i mean it's not exactly joyful music is it and certain people may interprete it in different ways. There are always complaints when someone says emo's are suicidal etc. but i've never seen a happy one..ever so i can see why the article has been printed.

Personally, I think it's a sad day for the world when people cannot except the way others wish to be. I think it's stupid that society nowadays has to be divided into certain social cliques. Just because these kids like My Chemical Romance, does not mean they are all 'emo'. Whether there were 10 or 10,000 kids there, the fact was they showed up and they attempted to make a difference. If they acheived that or not, is and should be, irrelevant. My Chemical Romance obviously mean a lot to these kids - myself included - and I feel performing a peaceful protest was a great idea. Standing up for something you love and admire is admirable in itself. So what if these kids 'took it too far'? The fact of the matter is they bothered to get off their backsides and do something about the, quite frankly, biased article that The Daily Mail produced. My Chemical Romance fans should not have to put up with being pinned as 'suicidal' just for the way they dress and the music they listen to. If I am not mistaken, Marilyn Manson has also been blamed for many suicides and shootings. Only a tiny minority of his fans are on the edge of killing themselves. We need to break down the stereotypes that the generation of today have so desperately latched onto. It's not fair if it's socially acceptable to dress in Burberry and listen to 50 Cent. People should be allowed to be who they want to be, and once again this battle is down to stereotyping. Woo for the MCRmy!

I don't think it was pointless, it was a protest against stereotyping and blaming people who have no reason to be blamed. The 5 guys in the band cannot be blamed for someone's suicide. Maybe people who are depressed/suicidal may be attracted to bands such as MCR as, yes, they often do focus on death. But they are not the cause of it. I listen to MCR and am the complete opposite of the stereotypical emo suicidal listener, and actually many people who like them are perfectly normal and do not want to kill themselves. Listening to a band cannot make you depressed, there must already be something wrong in your life or in your mind for you to feel like that.MCR have stated many times that they want to save lives and help people who are depressed, as Gerard Way has been depressed himself. A lot of their music has a lot of hope in it. As has been quoted many times the first line of the chorus to one of their biggest hits is "I am not afraid to keep on living".

I used to be a my chemical romance fan a few years ago, I no longer listen to their music.But I still think that this protest was a really good idea, many of my friends listen to mcr and when they heard about this they were really upset and annoyed. I can understand why these people felt the need to protest against the Dail Mail.Good on them!

Well I'm not a fan of MCR, but I do think it was unfair of the Daily Mail to blame one band for that poor girl's suicide. On the other hand, I agree with the people who think that maybe there are things that are more worth protesting about, such as world peace. I don't think this protest will make much difference, because as someone's already said, the writers will still be getting paid and the most they can do is say sorry. And MCRmy?! What the hell?

I am a massive MCR fan and I think that the people who done this had the right idea. I wish I lived there because I would have loved to go too. My Chem's music is amazing, inspiring and the lyrics mean something unlike many other bands. The people who think that this protest was pointless are wrong because these poeple are supporting their idols. I think that MCR would be really proud of their fans and The Daily Mail should apologise to them. Their music is great and people should respect that some people like it and its their choice. Emo is not a cult and MCR definatly didnt ruin a genre, they made it so much better!

The daily mail is a good example of stereotyping. I would have gone if i lived near London. The people who think its pointless to protest, If you were depressed or suicidal and the band (or whatever) that saved your life was being blamed for someones death what would you do? although all people do is judge so you probably wont understand. If you were homosexual or an outcast and the band that helped you to stay strong and never give up was being blamed for something like this what would it be like for you?Remember judging doesn't get you anywhere.

Don't you get it? MCR is NOT emo. I don't deny that their lyrics are dark and they sing about not-so-happy subjects, but the meanings they send out to the public are ALWAYS positive, anti-suicidal, anti-self-harm, and anti-drug. If you can't see that, then you are seriously stupid. This fact is why they have so many fans. True MCR fans know that this band is brilliant. They don't care about what others think. They're here to make a positive difference in the world, and they are doing it... by saving people.This protest is not just about My Chemical Romance, really. It's about all of the labeling, the in-acceptance, and the assholes in this world who do it. The thing is, it is absolutely NOT their fault that Hannah Bond committed suicide... that is just bullshit. Music isn't the cause for suicide... actually, it probably helped her for a while... but it just wasn't enough. She was probably bullied and teased in school, and was depressed.And you know what? I may not be emo, but I can tell you one thing about the people who are: they're smart. Unlike most, they're not shallow like most of the people in the world. They recognize the shitty things in life when every one else is ignorant of them. So what if they wear black and load on the mascara? It doesn't mean they are bad people.
