My Chemical Romance fans plan march against Daily Mail

My Chemical Romance

Fans will picket offices in protest against 'suicide cult' claims

My Chemical Romance fans are planning to march across London in protest against the depiction of the band in the media.

The march, to be held on May 31, will begin at Hyde Park's West Pond and end outside the offices of The Daily Mail.

The newspaper has recently dubbed My Chemical Romance a 'suicide cult' band in its coverage of the suicide of 13-year-old emo Hannah Bond.

Three hundred fans are so far confirmed to march against the British press, of which the organisers from the MCR Buzznet Community in a statement claim The Daily Mail is the 'worst offender'.

In 2006, the newspaper widely criticised emo and My Chemical Romance and has recently run general pieces about the dangers of the 'cult'.

Are people who are not big fans of my chemical romance but support the march and loath the daily mail for being bigoted hatemongers allowed to join in?

I'm going to this and cannot wait. It's going to be a great occassion to make our response to the offensive and ignorant claims that The Daily Mail made. The Daily Mail completely distorted MCR's message and directly insulted the fans repeatedly, they should have done their research before writing those articles. Music should NEVER be scapegoated and we're going to make a peaceful stand against it.

Awesome. i would totally march if i could. I'm so glad that they are standing up for MCR. People just need to get it through their heads that they dont encourage suicide. see my last comment for details because I dont want to get into that again.

Haha, are they having a laugh? I don't know which I detest more, MCR or The Daily Mail.

As ignorant as that article is, this stupid emo fad really needs to stop.

May 21, 2008

theres a terrible depiction of them in the media as im yet to see any paper/mag refer to them as UTTER GASH!!!! talentless f*ckers - Get A Bit of Ocean Colour Scene down there knock n livin the f**k up!!!! Rock n Roll, Pop n Soul!!!!

May 21, 2008

Good luck to them, it's horrible watching a national paper miss the mark repeatedly, but when the Daily Mail use a troubled girl's suicide as a reason to call a band a 'suicide cult', well that's not journalism, that's exploitation. You can only feel sorry for the family of Hannah, so hopefully this will turn a few heads and get an accurate portrayal of teens in the media.

It's not like the Daily Mail is actually a reputable newspaper publication or something as trivial as that.

May 21, 2008

Ooh, it's like Judas Preist all over again...If you play MCR records backwards however, they sound almost quite good.

Uh-huh

May 21, 2008

Fair play to the emos I say. Press are blame-mongers and just winding people up with all these "bank causes suicide" stories. I SERIOUSLY doubt anyone has ever killed themselves over a song and if they have, they clearly had other issues which should have been treated or dealt with. GO EMOS, GO!

DebbieDebbie

May 21, 2008

Someone should organize a march in Australia too. People that have no clue what the band or the music is about should shut the hell up. I hope the Daily Mail gets sued for all it's worth.

i would march but i'm at work. go mcr fans wooo!!

The Daily Mail is a poisonous rag. It twists and distorts, and has done so for many years. It cheered on the Britsih Fascist leader Oswald Mosley in the nineteen thirties and is still horrifically bigoted. Do not be fooled that they 'named and shamed' Stephen Lawrence's killers; that was nothing more than a PR stunt for the paper.By comparison, the MCR march may seem trivial, but the Daily Mail is symbolic of a wider malaise in society that must be stopped.I'm a teacher and I am horrified at the amount of vilification I see of emo-kids by the media and people using the media to their own foul ends. The Daily Mail should be closed down. Thank God for the Guardian and the NME.

I'd like to think there's alot bigger issues to complain to the daily mail about than this.

BigpoppaJ

May 21, 2008

As an avid reader of the Daily Mail I think it is quite commical bordering on farcical that a certain section of society will be marching against them, oh dear, what will their employers say, sorry I mean school teachers. Whatever happened to freedom of speech, freedom of political views. Anyone who goes on this march is an ar$e with too much time to play with and obviously needs educating. I pity the fools!

aphexbin

May 21, 2008

*groan*, well, good effort...whilst theyre at it, can they march to NME in protest of their continuous coverage of Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong. Now THAT is offensive.

shaunyeah

May 21, 2008

haha what the fuck!???? why do stupid emos who listen to this shit keep making complete twats of themselves. 'MCR' as they are known are one of the worst bands on the planet and no wonder listening to them drives people to kill themselves. you idiots need to get your heads out your arses and stop pretending that the daily mail is some evil monster, its a newspaper for fucks sake that gives then news from a right wing view. :O did i just say right wing! i must be a nazi

rach080291

May 21, 2008

i feel sorry for the girls family but did they reall know her/ know the reason she killed herself?a lot of parents arent exactly modern and think `emo` is a huge crazy `cult` that promotes death and you do get the psychos who think its cool 2 be like that but the majority of them arent and to actually highlight one band (which they had clearly never listened to) shows how much they listen to music. apparantly she was `happy and had everything` well maybe she didnt, maybe she was depressed because her parents didnt understand her and branded her a freak for daring to be different

rach080291

May 21, 2008

the daily mail article did make me laugh so much tho. a comment from her parent sayin shes scared for her 11 year old daughter who listens 2 MCR. DONT LET HER THEN! these stuck up ignorant TWATS make me laugh

May 22, 2008

As much as I hate the daily mail, in this case their reporting was accurate. It repeated what a professional coroner stated. It isn't their opinion, it's now legal fact that this band have blood on thier hands. They may think it's an easy way to make some money but peddling violent pro-suicide lyrics to children who have been convinced by clever marketing to believe them and are far too young to understand that it's all just entertainment and you aren't supposed to be taken that seriously is beyond irresponsible and we all have a duty to protect young people from being preyed upon by the people that market this poison. I can only imagine what a good laught the employees of the daily mail will have at a bunch of hysterically obsessed teeny boppers crying about their favourite boy band.

jimmyboy666

May 22, 2008

being emo is completely harmless. the kind of people that believe they have to harm themselves or worse to be emo are the same kind of people that play gta and think its ok to go around stealing cars. if any of these newspapers knew anything theyd know that mcr are anti emo and their lyrics don't glamorise death. the black parade is about where you go when you die and other emo bands like fall out boys lyrics are about love. its just a dumb steriotype that needs to die. thats why im gonna be marching on saturday. dunno the times though, can anyone help me out?

mcr101

May 22, 2008

im so going!

MrsBlood

May 22, 2008

It annoys me the amount of people on here who are taking the time to say that MCR are a crap band - this isn't actually about MCR, it's about the Daily Mail using a band as a scapegoat so they can sell some newspapers and scare parents all over the country. I read the articles, and they were ridiculous. At one point the mother admits that her daughter actually said to her 'I feel like killing myself' and her reply was 'don't be so silly, we'll talk about it tomorrow' - hours later the girl was dead! She cut herself and her father accepted that it was a fashion statement! MCR didn't kill this girl, she was crying out to her parents for help and they didn't pay attention. I think a lot of people should join this march, not just MCR fans, but anyone who wants the truth about issues such as youth suicide reported in a responsible manner by the media.

DeadlyPosion92

May 22, 2008

I'm going. Its not fair that MCR are being blamed for the suicide of a girl just because she was a fan. They have loads of fans and who haven't commited suicide. Doesn't this prove that it's not MCr's fault? I also hate the way the paper is making 'emo' sound like a 'cult' when it's not! So I am joining this march hoping that our point is made! The media is just looking for someone to blame, but thye are looking in the wrong place. My Chemical Romance haven't told emos to go hang themselves or slit their wrists, they just perform amazing songs because they like singing.

she-screams-RIOT

May 22, 2008

im definately going...I dont think its right to blame MCR for this...its so pathetic...I dont see why the daily mail are blaming MCR !?!?!?!?!?! MCR cannot be blamed.......SUPPORT MCR and go to the march ! >.

lectroneon: "peddling violent pro-suicide lyrics to children"Wow, you are so off the mark it's not even funny. Before posting, everyone needs to read MrsBlood's comment. Kudos to you, ma'am.

Indiegirl1982

May 22, 2008

There's only one problem. The Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday have completely different editorial teams and the march is planned for a Saturday... meaning no one from the Daily Mail will actually be working on May 31. Oh well...

Emos... know thy enemy. Watch this pod, learn more about the Daily Mail and see what happened to one man who was curious to find out what the effects of reading nothing but the Daily Mail for a month would be. Don't get sad, get emo! http://current.com/items/85017361_daily_mail_diet

EmosAreBleeding

May 23, 2008

has no body in the world noticed that the media indulges in blowing things completely out of proportion. in every thing we see the media wrongly accusing people who are members of a respectable scene.is this a lawful thing to do? many parents will have read this article and will now fear their children associating themselves with this scene!i think it is entirely wrong and unjustified to blame the tragic suicide on my chemical romance. after all they were not the one's who tied the noose around her, forgive me if i am wrong, even though i am sure i am not.

EmosAreBleeding

May 23, 2008

also does anybody know what time the march starts?

OH-LIVIA

May 24, 2008

Good luck to all those marching, I think it's a brilliant idea. The Daily Mail have definitely got it wrong and I don't think that MCR or being "emo" are to blame. What the media have to understand is that there is a big difference between fitting into the "emo" stereotype and being depressed. All this talk of "cults" is ridiculous.

citizenerased19

May 24, 2008

shaunyeah: it's on a saturday, and will probably be attended by mostly kids and teenagers..indiegirl, it's not actually about confronting the editors, but more about bringing this to their attention and generally giving the Daily Mail a bad press. I still think there will be people working in the offices for the next issue anyway.

citizenerased19

May 24, 2008

also the march starts at 10am.

MrsBlood

May 24, 2008

lectroneon your ignorance is astonishing. If a professional coroner has found that MCR is responsible for the death of this girl, then that coroner needs a job review! The Daily Mail reported a one sided fraction of an entire inquest, disregarding psychological assessment, parental ignorance, depression, and manifold other influences that lead to the death of this child. It failed to point out that for children suffering from depression, often finding a subculture or a band that they obsessively submerge themselves in, can be symptomatic of a greater problem, and instead of reporting on the evils of Emo and bands lumped into the genre, they should have written an article about listening to your kids and recognising signs of childhood depression. If my child came to me with cuts on her wrists or thoughts of suicide, I wouldn't let her out of my sight - I certainly wouldn't dismiss her, send her to bed, and then blame her favourite band for her death to anyone who would listen to me. Whilst I feel for the parents of this child, they had warning signs that they either did not recognise, or did not know how to deal with. They need to accept some responsibility for mistakes they made, and, by seeking out the TRUE reasons behind their daughters’ death, help to educate others, not trying to pass the blame. The Daily Mail has taken advantage of these people as much as they have taken advantage of MCR and the ‘emo’ scene to sell their newspaper. Yes, the Daily Mail probably are having a laugh, because they don't have the morals to do anything else.

i am gonna be there and i am sooooo glad that we are finally doing something about it rather than just sittin there and takin it.

LStandell

May 27, 2008

Seanyeah and BigpoppaJ YOU are being the pathetic ones, we're standing up for what we believe in and your just laughing, well laugh all you want, at least we don't have people like 50Cent saying 'get rich or DIE trying' That is encouraging suicide, not a band who are passionate about their music. Anyway, at least we don't go around stealing cars and shooting people so suck on that!

Pandora666

May 27, 2008

So if MCR are a 'suicide cult' because they are 'emo'(so says the mainstream) does that mean that Dashboard Confessional is also a 'suicide cult' because they're 'emo'? What about Fugazi or Weezer?

I assume the demo is taking place on a Saturday as everyone will be off school? You would assume the genius (I use that mildly) behind this innovative form of making their point, would have protested during the week? I'm sure the Daily Mail are very worried indeed

May 30, 2008

Er, there's no one at the Daily Mail offices on Saturday as they don't publish on Sunday ...

DreamTheaterAreTheWin

May 31, 2008

A) The Daily Mail wont be open on SaturdayB) You're protesting against media attacks on a group, rather than mourning the loss of a young girlC) 300 fans? Well I was always thought MCR was a small time band, this proves it.D) Emo isn't a good genre, the music is samey all the time. Not promoting other genres, but anyone can create the same mainstream "heres my lyrics about me slitting my own wrists how do you like" rubbish these people throw out.E) I love how someone said that people are naive if they believe songs can push someone over the edge. Perhaps if you silly emos removed the hair from your eyes you'd see that people ACTUALLY respond differently to different things. Auditory minds I believe it's called.F) Are you forgetting London is a chav community place? Chavs hate Emos, I hope they do us all a favour and slap you.

DreamTheaterAreTheWin

OH MY GOD!Some of you sound as bloody bad as the Daily Mail themselves!!!How can you sit there and act as MUSIC fans when you are slagging off people who are so dedicated to one band, let alone a style of music that they will travel from a far to stand up for something they believe in? Answer me this people, would you be arsed to go down there today if the Daily Mail where constantly slating your favourite artists? I can't ask that question with out jumping to a conclusion, which to be fair, a lot of your have done already!DreamTheaterAreTheWin, dude you of all people should be backing kids and music fans who want to stand out from the "norm", not slating them! Everyone starts somewhere and for these kids this may be there starting point! I started on Queena and the Beatles and went to G'NR, Metallica, Slayer, Speultura and then onto Death Metal, Black Metal, Hardcore, Industrial and beyond. Emo isn't a bad genre, they have just ended up being a scapegoat for the simple reason of how some of the musicians and fans wish to dress but this will NEVER effect how much the musicians love the music they make and perform and the fans like wise. What is even moire laughable is that MCR aren't even a bloody Emo band. They are just a really bad punk band! Real Emo bands are bands such as Sense Field, Texas Is The Reason, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Gameface. The term has just been forced upon anyone of any band that have a certain look and everybody seems to have stuck to itYes, this is a witch hunt just like Judas Priest back in the 80's and (not that it was covered as much) but the complete mental case who either killed a few people or planned to kill after hearing mesage in Pantera's music!lectroneon - Find me ONE single line of lyrics from ANY supposed Emo bands that says anything about "Please kill yourself" or "your better off dead" etc and I will stand behind you and agree with you, until then, you are a ****ing moron who actually has no place commenting on social society, music or anything people with an shred of intelligence can converse on!And and one final thingFor all the people who have nothing better to do than slag off MCR, bands like them and the whole "emo" genre with absolutely no clue about any of them, I have this to say!As much as I actually hate MCR, I'd rather listen to them on repeat till the day that I die than rather have to listen to even 3 minutes of the shit that is constantly covered by the NME!Thank you, good night!
