Field Day also sees Arctic Monkeys man hit the decks

Foals played their first UK festival headlining slot at Field Day last night (August 9).

The Oxford post-rockers played a storming set at the event, firing through tracks from their debut album 'Antidotes', including 'Red Sox Pugie' and 'Two Steps, Twice'.

"Thanks for sticking round for us," singer Yannis Philipakis told the crowd, referencing the torrential rain that deluged the site throughout the day.

The band then launched into an encore of 'Mathletics', the song that was controversially ommitted from 'Antidotes'.

The festival, now in its second year, took place at London's Victoria Park and mixed music with village fete-style events, including a tug of war, splat-a-rat and a carrot eating contest.

Laura Marling, Howling Bells and Lightspeed Champion were amongst the big draws on the Converse/Eat Your Own Ears stage, whilst Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders played a DJ set of hip-hop and electro.

Elsewhere, newcomers White Lies played an impressive set of Joy Division-esque electro-rock, Essex rockers Magistrates packed out the NME/Adventures In The Beetroot Field tent and US punks Les Savy Fav played the set of the weekend, inspiring a mass stage invasion.

Other performers included Noah and the Whale, Fionn Regan, Wild Beasts, Tunng and Jeffrey Lewis.

Backstage liggers included Klaxons and 2008 ShockWaves NME Awards presenter and 'Gavin And Stacey' star Mat Horne.

Mystery Jets, however, were forced to pull out of the festival due to illness, and Dan Deacon missed out after having his passport stolen.

100% agreed on that Foals should be Mercury nominated."Antidotes" is definitely one of the best debut albums of this year, if not THE best.
