Radiohead speak out against 'Greatest Hits' album

Thom Yorke asks: 'What's the purpose?'

Radiohead have attacked the release of their own 'Greatest Hits' album, which is being put out against their wishes by former label EMI.

The band's contract with the label ended last year, and they decided to offer their current album 'In Rainbows' as a free download before releasing it with XL, the label who had also put out Thom Yorke's 2006 solo album 'The Eraser'.

Speaking to The Word about the new collection's release, Yorke said: "We haven't really had any hits so what exactly is the purpose?"

He added: "There's nothing we can do about it. The work is really public property now anyway, in my head at least. It's a wasted opportunity in that if we'd been behind it, and we wanted to do it, then it might have been good."

Speaking about moving away from EMI he said: "Personally I just wanted to forget about it. It didn't feel right. And now it's like when you move house: you don't want to peer through the window and see what they've done with the wallpaper because it will only upset you."

Yorke also blasted claims they had asked for "£10 million" to re-sign with the label, a quote which came from Guy Hands, the label's boss.

"The idea what we were after so much money as to stretching the truth to breaking point," he declared. "That was his PR company briefing against us..I was so angry...it was a clear indication that the relationship was over."

It's a mystery to me why record companies bother releasing Greatest Hits packages by indie bands - the vast majority of their fanbase will already own much of said band's back catalogue as old cds or downloads. Coupling this with Thom's comments, I'm almost certain that very few Radiohead fans will be buying this album. Teens too young to remember 90s Radiohead also don't buy cds, so if they were to discover the band it would be via other, more modern forms of media. Here's to the Radiohead Greatest Hits selling 47 copies.

I dont no why hes moaning because he will proberbly still geta load of money from it and its his material in the first place. He should of asked his record company if he could of done the tracklisting.

I'm not a vengeful man, but Guy Hands is a fucking money-gobbling cock who deserves to boiled alive in his own blood then force fed the resulting black puddingy mess...Not that I condone violence obviously

Thing is EMI really missed an opportunity here. If they'd done a Radiohead rarities collection instead of a Greatest Hits they would have had Radiohead fans actually on their side rather than boycotting them, which is what will happen this way.

My sentiments exactly. When I first heard the Radiohead was bringing out a greatest hits album, i was stunned. They seem like the least likely band to do that. It's so pretentious, saying, yeah, here we've released another album for you to buy, it's all our GREATEST HITS. I mean, what the fuck is that? How arrogant can you get? I thought it seemed odd for Radiohead. Relieved now :)

I doubt it will make the top 40 and it may even lose money, The Libertines greatest hits sold poorly so I doubt this will do well.

I believe they've released a Greatest Hits so people don't have to suffer the unlistenable rubbish Radiohead have produced since Ok Computer.

My mate brav absolutely loves Radiohead so he'll be over the moon with this news. Coupled with a new Beck album and on the back of the latest Bjork album, it's superb news for all fans of people who pretend to like shit music.

A little narrow minded from the first comment. I'm 16 years old and have been listening to radiohead as far as I can remember, and I buy cds. But still, the greatest hits sounds like a miss for me.

James, do you know anything about contracts?

Given that you've just namechecked three of the best musical acts of the past twenty years, Spilling, I can only imagine what amazing music you must listen to. Do enlighten us.I could perhaps understand this release if it contained rare material, or other exclusive tidbits that people can't get anywhere else. As it is, Radiohead are already a Marmite act and the folks who spread them on their aural toast won't benefit from it in any way.See also: EMI's desperate cash-in boxed set of all the albums.

The CD collection holds little interest for me as I own more or less all of Radiohead's output from the Drill E.P. to In Rainbows, but the DVD of all their videos is going to be well worth having as none since the "7 TV Commercials" set have been made available.

Thom Yorke for Prime Minister, if your a fan you don't need a greatest hits, your best starting from the beginning and seeing who much they have progressed over time in sound and vision.

Dang. Radiohead fans know them good. Looks like the greatest hits album will be skipped, and I'll risk a late pass to their other album purchases.
